How to Fit Your Cat: Collars, Harnesses & Safety

Coco & Pud's simple guide to fitting your cat — collars, harnesses and staying safe outdoors.

Fitting your cat is refreshingly simple: kittens take the kitten size, cats take the cat size. But one safety rule matters more than sizing — never walk your cat on a collar and lead. Always use a harness. Cat collars are designed to break away (release) if they snag, which keeps your cat safe day-to-day but means a collar should never take the pull of a lead.

Cat collars — safety first

Our cat collars are breakaway safety collars with a bell — the buckle releases if your cat gets caught on something, preventing injury, and the bell gives wildlife a warning. Sizing is simple: kitten size for kittens, cat size for adult cats. Shop the Toile de Chien Rose Cat Safety Collar & Bell or the Gingham Rose Cat Safety Collar & Bell. Because these are breakaway, they're for everyday wear and ID tags — not for attaching a lead.

Walking your cat — use a harness

For any lead walking, choose a cat harness, which spreads pressure safely across the body instead of the neck. Same simple sizing — kitten or cat. The Le Jardin Cat Harness comes on its own or as a matching harness & lead set, and you can pair it with a Gingham cat lead.

For outdoor cats — track them with an AirTag

If your cat spends time outdoors, we always recommend popping an Apple AirTag on their harness so you can find them if they wander. Our Pet AirTag Holder (Cat + Cat Harnesses) clips neatly onto a cat harness for peace of mind.

How to check the fit

You should be able to slide one to two fingers under the collar or harness — snug enough that it won't slip off, comfortable enough that it isn't tight. As always, measure your cat and check the size chart on the product listing before ordering.

Complete the look

Finish with a matching Le Jardin cat bandana or Gingham cat bow tie.
